Understanding the Three-Brain System

Your child's body contains three intelligent systems working together: the head brain (cognition and sensory processing), the heart brain (emotions and connection), and the gut brain (digestion and immune function). When one system becomes overwhelmed, it affects your child's entire experience—from meltdowns to focus, from anxiety to physical symptoms. This quiz helps identify which system needs the most support right now.

How to Use This Quiz
01
Rate Each Statement
For each item, choose the number that best describes your child over the past 3 months: 0 = Never, 1 = Sometimes, 2 = Often, 3 = Almost Always
02
Complete All Three Sections
Work through the Head Brain, Heart Brain, and Gut Brain sections carefully. Take your time and trust your observations as a parent.
03
Calculate Your Scores
Add up the points for each section separately. Your highest score reveals which brain system is most dysregulated and driving your child's challenges.
04
Read Your Results
Review the interpretation for your child's highest-scoring area to understand their unique pattern and discover targeted support strategies.

Remember: There are no right or wrong answers. This quiz provides insight into your child's nervous system patterns so you can offer compassionate, effective support.
🧠 Section 1: Head Brain Assessment
Attention • Sensory Processing • Executive Function
This section explores cognitive, sensory, and behavioral patterns related to your child's neurological processing. Rate how often these experiences occur for your child.
  • Has trouble focusing or staying on task
  • Easily distracted or impulsive
  • Difficulty switching between activities
  • Struggles with multi-step directions
  • Transitions trigger stress (leaving house, bedtime, school)
  • Overwhelmed in noisy, bright, or busy environments
  • Experiences sensory overload (sound, light, textures, crowds)
  • Mind becomes "stuck" on certain thoughts or activities
  • Gets frustrated quickly when plans change
  • Paces, fidgets, or constantly seeks movement
  • Sleep is restless or struggles to fall asleep
  • Wakes up tired after a full night of sleep
  • Gets headaches or complains of head "tightness"
  • Overstimulated in group settings or gatherings
  • Becomes rigid when routines change unexpectedly
Total Head Brain Score: _______
💗 Section 2: Heart Brain Assessment
Emotions • Connection • Co-Regulation
This section examines emotional processing and relationship patterns. These questions help identify how your child manages feelings, connection, and emotional intensity.
  • Experiences strong emotional reactions (anger, fear, sadness)
  • Has sudden emotional "storms" or shutdown moments
  • Becomes anxious when separated from a parent
  • Struggles to identify or express feelings
  • Gets overwhelmed when someone else is upset
  • Clings, withdraws, or avoids during emotional intensity
  • Becomes defensive or sensitive to correction
  • Struggles with self-soothing after a meltdown
  • Needs constant reassurance or approval
  • Avoids eye contact when upset
  • Shows emotional empathy but feels overwhelmed by it
  • Emotions change very quickly (happy to meltdown)
  • Easily hurt by tone of voice or facial expression
  • Experiences chest tightness, fast heartbeat, or body tension
  • Overwhelmed by interpersonal conflict or group dynamics
Total Heart Brain Score: _______
🌿 Section 3: Gut Brain Assessment
Digestion • Energy • Immunity • Inflammation
This section focuses on physiological symptoms and inflammation markers. The gut-brain connection profoundly impacts mood, behavior, and sensory processing.
  • Experiences constipation, bloating, or abdominal pain
  • Appetite fluctuates significantly
  • Has food sensitivities or sensory-based food aversion
  • Energy swings between hyperactive and exhausted
  • Appears fatigued, pale, or low-energy often
  • Gets sick often (colds, allergies, eczema, asthma)
  • Has big meltdowns when hungry or tired
  • Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Sweats excessively or feels hot during emotional stress
  • Experiences skin issues, rashes, or inflammation
  • Complains of tummy aches during anxiety or transitions
  • Craves carbohydrates, sugar, or certain textures
  • Mood significantly affected by what or when they eat
  • Chews on objects, picks skin, or seeks oral sensory input
  • Has tension around the abdomen or "gut anxiety"
Total Gut Brain Score: _______
Understanding Your Results
Your child's highest scoring category represents their most dysregulated brain system. This is the primary driver of meltdowns, behaviors, and sensory or emotional overwhelm.
All three brain systems matter and work together, but identifying the strongest pattern helps you focus support where it's needed most. Review the detailed interpretation for your child's highest-scoring area below.
Head Brain Pattern
Cognitive overload and sensory processing challenges
Heart Brain Pattern
Emotional dysregulation and connection difficulties
Gut Brain Pattern
Physiological stress and inflammation responses
What Your Child's Pattern Means
1
🧠 Head Brain — Cognitive Overload Pattern
Your child experiences: ADHD-type symptoms, difficulty focusing, sensory overwhelm, executive dysfunction, rigidity during transitions, and overstimulation. Their neural circuitry is firing too fast or inconsistently.
They need: Brainwave training (neurofeedback), sensory regulation strategies, visual schedules with gentle structure, HRV coherence practices, reduced overstimulation, and safe routines for transitions.
2
💗 Heart Brain — Emotional Dysregulation Pattern
Your child experiences: Meltdowns triggered by emotions, difficulty naming feelings, attachment stress, "big reactions" to small events, difficulty calming down, and shutdown or freeze responses. They are highly sensitive and emotionally overwhelmed.
They need: Co-regulation techniques, HeartMath emotional coherence practice, parent nervous-system modeling, somatic safety, and predictable emotional language routines.
3
🌿 Gut Brain — Physiological Stress Pattern
Your child experiences: Digestive issues, food sensitivities, energy crashes, inflammation, immune challenges, sensory processing difficulties, and emotional dysregulation tied to physical discomfort.
They need: Gut support, gentle functional medicine, inflammation reduction, circadian and sleep rhythm reset, sensory-friendly nutrition, and vagus nerve support.

All three scores high? Your child needs a multi-layered, gentle, consistent approach addressing all systems together—exactly what Kids Neuro-Coherence™ provides.
System-Wide Dysregulation Support
If your child scored high across all three brain systems, they're experiencing system-wide dysregulation. This doesn't mean something is wrong—it means their nervous system needs comprehensive, integrated support.
